Alive
Painted in 1850. Six men are holding on to a piece of mast, and the sun is coming up. Their ship went down in the night. The picture shows none of that, only the wreckage and the light. Sailors used to count waves, and they believed the ninth was the one that killed you. That wave is rising behind the men now. Aivazovsky was 32 when he painted it, from memory, in a studio a long way from the sea. He said you cannot copy a living sea. You can only remember it. The trick of the picture is the light. The sun stands right behind the deadliest thing in it, so the wave comes up glowing like coloured glass. Whether that is mercy or a joke, the painting does not say.

Six men and a broken mast are the whole record of the night behind this morning. One still has the strength to signal.
